In partnership with the Royal Foundation, we’ve been working with young people from St Ann’s, Nottingham for the last couple of months. Notorious, for being a tough neighbourhood, our team alongside, Epic Partners and Community Recording Studio have been working with local youth to harness their creativity and develop a film.
We were keen to create a the film that reflects the real lives of the people in St Ann’s and after a girl shared her experience of being kicked out by her mother in one of the development workshops, we realised that leaving home, whatever the circumstances, was a theme everyone in the group could identify with. The final film will explore some very difficult issues, from homelessness to family conflict, but the tone is ultimately hopeful. Emphasising that difficult situations and setbacks don’t have to define your life.
After working with a professional writer to develop the script, filming starts next week and we’re very excited! The group have come a very long way in such a short amount of time. As well as teaching them how to use camera equipment, editing software and how creative ideas are developed from concept to screen, it’s been great to see how the young people’s confidence has grown during the course of the project. By celebrating the youth talent in St Ann we hope the film will inspire young people across the country to pursue their creative dreams.
